Angeles Alvarino

Angeles Alvarino  (C. japonica).Published in Camelia, Sociedad Española de la Camelia, No. 40-41, 2022, p.73, with color photos. International Camellia Journal, 2023, No. 55, p.49. A seedling from C. japonica, originated by Leonor Magariños in Cuntis, Pontevedra (Spain). Registered by the Estación Fitopatolóxica Areeiro (Deputación de Pontevedra, Pontevedra, Spain) in 2023. FLOWER: medium to big size, 9.5-12 cm in diameter and 4-6 cm depth; semi-double form; dark red in color, 53A-B (RHSCC), with darker veins; 25-50 petals, rounded and irregular the external ones, and irregular the internal, with waved margin, occasionally fimbriated in some internal petal; 60 to 120 stamens with cream in color filaments. LEAVES: 7.5-9 cm length and 3-4 cm width, brilliant medium to dark green, elliptic to lanceolate, lightly dentate margin and acuminate apex. PLANT: shrub with medium and semi-open growth habit. Early blooming period, from December to April. Other data:  this camellia was named in honor of Ángeles Alvariño (Ferrol 1916- California 2005), first oceanographer woman in Spain and renowned marine researcher. Her research was focused on zooplankton and she discovered 22 new species. She was considered as one of the 50 best scientists of the USA in the 20^th Century for her scientific work (Encyclopedia of World Scientist, Oakes, 2007). She’s the only Spanish woman included among the most influential scientists in history.
