Paxton, 1840, Supplement to Botanical Dictionary as “bright crimson”. Listed by many sources as from “rose red” to “violet crimson”. Buist, 1845, The American Flower Garden Directory, 3rd ed, p.218: Violet crimson, spotted with white, flower 8 cm across, perfectly imbricated to the centre and a most pleasing double. Foliage dark green, a plant of good habit. Invalidly used in America, as a synonym for ‘Enrico Bettoni’ which is, itself, a syn­onym for ‘Haley’s Monarch’.
