Berlèse, 1837, Monographie, ed.1, p.77 as ‘Hallesia’: Leaves large, oblong, much toothed, of a beautiful green; bud small, elongate; flower large, double, rose coloured; the first rows of petals recurved, imbricated; those at the centre small, twisted and striped with white. A few abortive stamens. Originated in England as a seedling of the red single (Rubra) As the camellia is named for Mr Hale, the orthography is Halesia. Ortho­graphic errors: ‘Halesii’, ‘Haleysia’, ‘Hallesia’, ‘Halleana’, ‘Hallesii’.
