Hongse Xunzhang

Hongse Xunzhang (C. japonica cultivar'Nuccio's Carousel' × C. azalea). Liu Xinkai et al. 2023, Illustrations of the New Camellia Hybrids that Bloom Year-round, Zhejiang Science and Technology Publishing House, p.190. HA-79-3., a cross seedling (NZMD-No.5) of C. japonica cultivar'Nuccio's Carousel' × C. azalea. Flowers bright red to dark red, rose-double form, large size, 10.0-12.5cm across and 5.5cm deep with 18-21 large petals arranged in 3-4 rows as star shaped, petals broad obovate, grooved, thickly fleshy, central large petals semi-erected, petaloids clustered, occasionally with small white patches, petals fall one by one. Leaves dark green, heavy leathery, broad elliptic, margins obtusely serrate. Plant upright, branches dense and growth vigorous. Starts to bloom from late-summer, fully blooms from autumn to winter and sporadically in spring. The cultivar name means “Red Medal”.
