Feng et al., 1986, Yunnan Camellias of China, p.69, colour photo: Leaves oblong-ovate, flat, slightly reclinate, apices acute, bases cuneate to broad-cuneate, 6-10 cm long x 3-4.9 cm wide. Flowers pink (RHS.CC.57D), diameter 11-14 cm. Petals about 20 in 3-4 whorls, outer whorls flat, inner whorls folded and erect. Stamens numerous, divided into several groups by the folded petals. Pistils well developed or rudimentary. Fertile. The leaves are thick, yellow and asymmetric. The petals are few, curved and erect so as to look like butterfly wings. It is cultivated in Kunming. There is an ancient tree in the Golden Temple, Kunming with a height of 15m and an age estimated as over 300 years. Flowers early to mid-season. In the book Diannan Chahua Xioazhi, 1930, it is recorded that, “There are two cultivars named ‘Diechi’. Yinhong Diechi has petals that look like butterfly wings and spinel pink flowers. Fenhong Diechi has petals that look like butterfly wings and pink flowers. It is believed that Fenhong Diechi is synonymous with Houye Diechi. Different readings: ‘Houyehtiechih’, ‘Hou-yeh Tieh-ch’ih’, ‘Hou Yeh Tieh Chih’, ‘Ho-Yeh-Tie-Chih’. ‘Hoyetiechih’. Synonyms: ‘Dayediechi’, ‘Fenhong Diechi’. Houye Diechi 厚叶蝶翅(Thick Leaf Butterfly Wings)。(C. reticulata)云南茶。1930，中国云南。半重瓣、蝶翅形、紫桃色、大〜巨大(11〜14cm)、花瓣约20枚、3〜4重排列、散蕊状、花期1〜4月、果期9〜10月，斑叶品种、乳黄色覆轮、树势强。昆明金殿寺境内古木1株、高约15米、树龄超过300年。同种异名：Butterfly Wings (厚叶蝶翅）、大蝶翅 (Dadiechi)、大叶蝶翅(Dayediechi)、Large Leaf Butterfly Wings、Thick Leaf Butterfly。

冯国楣、夏丽芳、朱象鸿，1981.《云南山茶花》，图片p.46-47，文字描述p.120。厚叶蝶翅（大叶蝶翅）（Houyediechi) Thick Leaf Butterfly Wing.【叶】长椭圆状卵圆形，长6-10厘米，宽3-4.9厘米，先端急尖，基部楔形或宽楔形，叶面平伸或略向内曲。【花】淡桃红色（R.H.S.C.C.57D)，直径11-14厘米。花瓣约20片，3-4轮着生。外轮花瓣平伸，内轮曲折直立。雄蕊多数，分数组，混生于曲折的花瓣中。雌蕊发育良好或退化，能结实。花期1月下旬至4月上旬。本品种叶片肥厚，现黄晕，两侧多不对称。花瓣少，但卷旋直立，有若蝴蝶展翅，故名。昆明东郊金殿寺内现存古树一株（图版77)，高达15米左右，估计树齡在300年以上。《滇南茶花小志》记载蝶翅品种有二：“一为银红蝶翅，瓣形似蝶翅，色银红��；“另一为粉红蝶翅，瓣形似蝶翅，色粉红”。据观察推测，可能后者是指厚叶蝶翅。

俞德浚、冯耀宗, 1958. 《云南山茶花图志》， p.19。朱國棟、蔡燦玉，2011. 《台灣茶花族譜》，p.129. 管开云、李纪元、王仲朗. 2014.《中国茶花图鉴》p. 263。原产地：中国云南中科院昆明植物研究所植物园。性状描述：花深红色，松散牡丹型，大型花，花径12~13cm，花瓣24~26枚，宽卵圆形，4~5轮排列，外轮花瓣波状，内轮曲折或两片中部以下合生，雄蕊分束夹生于曲折的花瓣中，雌蕊多数退化，少数发育良好，偶有结实，花量稠密。叶片黄绿色，边缘具黄色斑点，长椭圆形，长9.5~14cm，宽4~7cm，先端长渐尖，下弯，基部楔形，叶面略内曲，叶脉明显；植株开张，生长中等。花期：12月下旬至翌年2月中旬。识别点：本品种从‘早桃红’自然杂交种子实生苗中选育，花色深红，松散牡丹型，叶片黄绿色，多具黄色斑点，叶脉明显，花期早。
