Jimena Fernandez de la Vega

Originated in Finca Chazo, Boiro (Spain) by Begoña Franco from C. japonica seed. Registered by Estación Fitopatolóxica Areeiro (Deputación de Pontevedra, Galicia, SPAIN). FLOWER: large size, 10.5-12 cm in diameter and around 3-5 cm depth; formal double to rose form, rose color 58C (RHSCC) fading to lighter pink or even white in center, with 50-85 petals, rounded the outer ones, and elliptical the inner ones, with incise or cordate margin; occasional petaloids, and low in number, from 5 to 35; stamens only presents in rose form flowers, with color cream filaments. LEAF: 9-12 cm length and 4-6 cm width, medium green, elliptical to occasionally lanceolate, lightly dentate margin, pointed apex and acute base. PLANT: compact shrub with medium growing rate. Medium blooming period, it begins in January and extends until May. Other data: it was named in honor of Jimena Fernández de la Vega, a pioneer woman in medical genetics in Spain. She was born in Asturias (N Spain) and with her twin, Elisa, they were the first two women to obtain a medical degree at University of Santiago de Compostela in 1919. They both obtained the higher qualification and the academic merits Medal of the king Alfonso II, and Jimena also got the Extraordinary Award. She continues studying in other European countries like Italy and German, and she was a pioneer in the application of genetics in medicine. She published numerous works on genetics and Hydrology, the field which she dedicated the last years of her career. A woman ahead of her age and an example of work and dedication.
