Encyclopedia of Camellias in Colour, vol.I, 1972, p.367; and pl.444, vol.II, p.176, description, p.262: Large size, red, anemone centered semi-double, 13 cm across with two rows of large, rounded outer petals, 13-15 in number and a compact centre of red and white petaloids. Leaves broad-ovate to ovate, apices abrupt acute, margins sharply serrate. Originated in Japan at the Konpira Temple, Kagawa Prefecture. Named and released by Saneichi Ogawa in 1972. “Konpira” = the sea­man’s god; “Benkei” is the name of an ancient warrior of Japan. See also colour photo: Seibundō Shinkōsha, 1979, Senchinshū, p.58.
