Minagawa, 1933, Chinkashū. Wada, 1941, Garden Treasures of Japan: Intense crimson, semi-double with large, smooth petals, cup shaped. Tuyama, 1966, Camellia Cultivars of Japan, pl. 118: Deep red, medium size, incomplete double with 4-5 rows of imbricated outer petals, about a small irregular group of stamen. A seedling of Kōkirin raised by Minagawa, Iza’emon in the Kantō district, Japan. Note: Kirin also means an imaginative creature, often alluding to an infant prodigy.
