Itō, Ihei, 1695, Kadan Chikinshō, #123; Itō, Jukyū, 1739, Honzō Hanamaki’e; and Kasuya, Kamegorō, 1859, Tsubaki Irohanayose Irotsuki. The tone of colour is that of the handkerchief called “Kanoko-shibori”. Peony form, red with white spots. Early flowering. Originated in Japan. The strict meaning of “Kanoko” is a fawn, but in this case it means a spotted design like the coat of a fawn.(Believed extinct.)
