Oyler's King David (C. japonica). published in American Camellia Yearbook 2021, p. 94. Registered in 2021. ACS Registration #3232. A 12 year old chance seedling - Parents Unknow, first bloomed in 2017. It was originated and registered by Donald Oyler from Mobile, AL, USA. Flowers formal double, dark rich burgundy. Flower size medium, 8.9 cm in diameter, 3.2 in depth. Leaves dark green, size medium, 8.9 cm long, 3.8 cm wide. Growth rate slow, growth habit compact form, medium density, cold hardy. Flower long last bloom, fall in one piece. Blooming season medium. Judge James Smelley:” The form is very desirable because if you are entering it in a show, blooms with those curled-in petals, they tend to hold their form better”. Judge Randolph Maphis:“Really dark burgundy color is very rare . Really likes the darker double formal flowers. Definitely worthy of being introduced”.
