Description

» English Description

Robert Tyas, 1843, Popular Flowers, p.86. No description or history. Loddiges Catalogue, 1844, p.7. Originated in England. Note: There are three cultivars to which this name has been applied. There is the original valid one; Gheldorf, Const., 1844, Catalogue of Plants and Price List, p.12: Handsomely imbricated double, deep reddish carmine; a  second  cultivar is the sport of Mathotiana Alba;  the third one is a sport of Julia Drayton as ‘Mathotiana’, which is the cultivar distributed in the USA and is illustrated in the  Macoboys's "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Camellias" at page 171. Note: "Rosea  Superba" is an Italian name. "rosea"  does not mean "rose" but pink or  rose or  carmine fading into another color, e.g.  carmine  to light pink.  A good example of "rosea" "Virginia  Franco  Rosea' (see).
