Description

» English Description

Andrew’s, 1802, Botanical Repository, vol.3, pl.199 as ‘Rubro Plena’; Curtis, Samuel, 1819, Monograph on the Genus Camellia, pl.3; Loddiges, 1823, The Botanical Cabinet, vol.4, pl.397; Chandler & Booth, 1831, Illustrations and Descriptions of Camellias…pl.18: The flowers are about 8-9 cm across. They are of a crimson red colour and resemble the flowers of a large, double, hibiscus. The petals are numerous, of an irregular shape, comparatively long, narrow and pointed, with their edges compressed so as almost to meet. They are nearly upright, and diminish in size towards the centre, which is not elevated. Sometimes the flower has a different appearance, the petals being smaller, similar in colour and formation, but fewer in number and more regular with several parcels of stamens in the centre. It was imported from China in 1794 by Sir Robert Preston, Essex, England. One of the first of the horticultural varieties of C.japonica to reach the Western World, its nomenclature has a long history of confusion. Orthographic variants of the name Rubra Plena include: ‘Flore Rubro Pleno’, ‘Flore Pleno Rubra’, ‘Rubro-plena’, ‘Rubro Pleno’, ‘Rubro Plena’, ‘Rubra Pleno’. Synonyms: ‘Old Red’, ‘Double Red’, ‘Grevellii’, ‘Greville’s Red’, ‘Rouge Double’, ‘Greavill’s Double Red’, ‘Crevelle’s Red’, ‘Queen of Denmark’, ‘Rubra Maxima’, ‘Rubra Maxima Plena’, ‘Rubro Maxima’, ‘Rubro Flore Pleno’, ‘Old Double Red’, ‘Newington’, ‘Madame Lavis’. The name Rubra Plena has been erroneously applied to the following cultivars: Prince Eugene Napoleon, ‘Pope Pius IX’. C.M. Hovey, Carlotta Grisi, Middlemist’s Red, Madame Lebois. Chinese synonym ‘Lubola’.
