» English Description

Vasco da Gama (C.japonica), – José Marques Loureiro, Catálogo Nº1, 1865, p.37 e Nº3, 1866, Ref.193, p.44: Peony form. Vivid cherry pink, most of the time blotched white. List of Portuguese Camellias (3th ed., data still unknown); Oliveira, A. C. and Assunção, A. (2020). Camelia, 2020, Nº36, Junio, p.40: Obtained by the well-known horticulturist José Marques Loureiro, it was already for sale in his catalogue Nº1 of 1865, p.37. Flower: 6.5 - 7.5 cm across; Medium to dark pink background, at the beginning of flowering evolving to lighter with maturation flowering cycle, presenting some white blotches and heavy veins. Anemone to peony form. Petals numerous, irregular, forming a tuft in the center of the flower; Stamens absent or few in number. Leaf: average 9.4 cm long and 4,0 cm wide, medium to dark green. Plant: Vertical, Upright. Bloom: Early. Other information: The oldest known cultivar is located at Parque da Pena, Sintra, Portugal.
