Today I was so sad to learn that Mr. Bruce Bartholomew, longtime curator in the California Academy of Sciences herbarium and noted expert on the flora of China, had passed away yesterday. He fell down a flight of stairs and hit his head. By the time his wife found him he was rushed to the hospital but Bruce did not recover. We are all in shock here at KIB since Bruce was healthy and active and worked on Chinese flowering plants. He was only 77. Bruce was one of the nicest, gentlest and kindest of men. Our deep condolences to his family and colleagues.
I met Bruce many years ago, and had gone with him to explore the plants in the Gaoligong Mountains of West Yunnan since 2000 and lasted ten years only for this Mountains. He came to China many times and very familiar to the flora of China. He was the co-author of the book Camellia (1984) with Prof. Chang Hungta of Sun Yat-sen University, and the co-author of Theaceae in Flora of China (v. 12, 2007) with Prof. Min Tianlu of Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB).
