Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter dies at 100
Jimmy Carter, who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, died on Sunday at the age of 100, the Carter Center confirmed. "Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia," the center announced on social media X, formerly known as Twitter. During Carter's presidency, in December 1978, China and the United States issued the Joint Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the People's Republic of China and the United States of America. On Jan. 1, 1979, the two countries officially established diplomatic relations.
In 1982, Prof. Zhang Aoluo, the deputy-director of Kunming Institute of Botany of CAS, visited USA together with Prof. He Shan-an of Nanjing Botanical Garden. Jimmy like camellia very much. and the secratary of American Camellia Society, Mr. Milton H. Brown, guide them to visit Jimmy' home, had a group photo on 7 April 1982.
In 2018, the American Camellia Society held a ceremony on Dec. 7, 2018 at the Carter Center in Alanta, Georgia to present the 39th President of the United States with Camellia japonica 'Jimmy Carter'.
