Camellia brevistyla, Subgenus Camellia, Sect. Paracamellia, Chang Hung-ta and Bruce Bartholomew (1984). Camellias, p.51: Camellia brevistyla (Hay.) Cohen-Stuart, Meded. Proefst. Thee 40: 67. 1916. [Description] Branchlets pubescent. Leaves oblong or elliptic, petioles short. Bracts and sepals7-8, petals 5, filaments basally slightly connate, ovaries pubescent; styles 3-4-parted, 1.5-3mm long. Capsules globose, 1 cm in diameter. The bark is reddish-brown on the old branches of Zhou 6541 from Fujian. Qin 3108from Anhui was determined by Sealy (Rev. Gen. Camellia, 215. 1958) to be C. microphylla, but it belongs to this species.  [Distribution] Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Anhui, Jiangxi. [Synonym] Thea brevistyla Hay., Fl. Mont. Flowers are white with a slightly sweet fragrance,3.0-5.0 cm in diameter, borne at the tip of the shoots, and in leaf axils; bud set sometimes abundant. Perules 8, drop as corolla expands, outside densely pubescent in central portion, inside glabrous. Petals 6-8, 1.8-2.9 cm long, 1.3-1.7 cm wide, obovate to obcordate, variably cleft 0-3 mm, free or fused with the staminal column up to 3 mm. Androecium glabrous, nearly free or fused at the base up to 5 mm forming a cup, 50-70 stamens. Gynoecium 6-10 mm long, 2 or 3 styles, 50%-80% fused from the base, ovary densely tomentose. Blooming season: autumn to early winter. Capsules variously ovoid to pyriform in shape, 1.7-3.1 cm in length, 1.5-1.9 cm in diameter, densely villous, hair may be partially eroded by maturity, 3 locules with 1-2 seeds per fruit. Seed oil content ranges from 42.8%-50.5%.Leaves elliptic to broadly elliptic, tips acute or weakly acuminate, base cuneate to slightly rounded, mostly 3.5-7.8 cm long and 1.4-3.8 cm wide, margin serrulate, puberulent along the upper midrib becoming partially glabrescent in time, lower surface glabrous. Petioles 3-7 mm long, upper side puberulent, glabrous below. Shrub or small tree up to 8 m tall, young shoots sparsely to strongly villous becoming smooth in time, twigs dark brown in color, older branches smooth and rust-colored. Destribution: Mainly in hilly areas at mid-elevations in Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Jiangxi and Taiwan Provinces of China; Elevation: 200-800 m; Specific locality: Minhou Oil-tea Forest Farm, Minhou County, Fujiang Province, China.
