Small tree, about 4 meters high; young branches are sturdy, about 3.5 mm in diameter, sparsely yellow pubescent, annual branches become glabrous, purple-brown. Leaves are papery, oblong or oblong-elliptic, 24-26 cm long, 8-8.5 cm wide, blunt-pointed at the apex, with a blunt tip, heart-shaped at the base, sparsely shallowly serrated at the margin, dark green, shiny, glabrous, yellow-green on the back, sparsely pubescent along the lower part of the midrib when young, then glabrous, midrib raised on both sides, 16-20 pairs of lateral veins, slightly concave on the surface, raised on the back, and the reticulate veins are not obvious; petiole is sturdy, 5-7 mm long, about 3 mm thick, purple-brown, sparsely yellow pubescent. Flower solitary in leaf axils or nearly terminal, bright red (according to collection records); pedicel short, 3-4 mm long; bracteoles 5-6, ovate or nearly round, 3-5 mm long, both sides with yellow powdery pubescence; sepals 5, broadly ovate, 9-14 mm long, 7-10 mm wide, both sides with yellow powdery pubescence; petals 9-12, 2-4 on the outside broadly obovate, 1.5-2.5 cm long, 1.2-2 cm wide, both sides Yellow powdery pubescence, the rest are obovate or long obovate, 3-4 cm long, 2-2.5 cm wide, glabrous on both sides, fused at the base, 3-5 mm long; stamens are numerous, about 2.5 cm long, outer filaments are glabrous, fused into a tube in the lower half, inner filaments are nearly free, pubescent; ovary is ovoid, about 2 mm in diameter, 3-locus, fasciculates are yellow pubescent, styles are 3, free, 2.5-2.8 cm long, pubescent at the base. Fruit not seen.

Distributed in Nghe Tinh Province in northern Vietnam, grown in old forests at an altitude of 130-210 meters. Sino-Vietnamese Expedition Team 1790, Kuizhou, Nghe Tinh Province, Vietnam, Herbarium of Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences 52815 (model!)

This species is morphologically similar to  C. krempfii (Gagnep.) Sealy. Chang (1981) mistakenly identified the Sino-Vietnamese Expedition Team 1790 specimen as the latter. The difference is that the leaves of this species are papery, wider than the latter, without glandular dots on the back, and sparsely pubescent along the midrib at the bottom; the petiole is short and pubescent, the pedicel is short, and the ovary is 3-locus.

Camellia calcicola has most recently been assessed for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2015. Camellia calcicola is listed as Data Deficient.

小乔木，高约4米;幼枝粗壮，径约3.5毫米，疏生黄色微柔毛，一年生枝变无毛，紫褐色。叶纸质，长圆形或长圆状椭圆形，长24-26厘米，宽8-8.5厘米，先端钝急尖，具钝尖头，基部心形，边缘疏生浅锯齿，表面深绿色,有光泽，无毛，背面黄绿色，幼时沿中脉下部疏生柔毛，后变无毛，中脉两面隆起，侧脉16-20对，在表面微凹，背面突起，网脉不显；叶柄粗壮，长5-7毫米，粗约3毫米，紫褐色，疏被黄色柔毛。花单生叶腋或近顶生，鲜红色(根据采集记录）；花梗短，长3-4毫米;小苞片5-6枚,卵形或近圆形，长3-5毫米，两面被黄色粉状微柔毛;萼片5,阔卵形，长9-14毫米，宽7-10毫米，两面被黄色粉状微柔毛;花瓣9-12,外方2-4枚阔倒卵形，长1.5-2.5厘米，宽1.2-2厘米,两面被黄色粉状微柔毛，其余的倒卵形或长倒卵形，长3-4厘米，宽2-2.5厘米，两面无毛，基部连生，长3-5毫米;雄蕊多数，长约2.5厘米,外轮花丝无毛，下半部合生成管，内轮花丝近离生，被微柔毛;子房卵球形，径约2毫米，3室，牵^被黄色绒毛，花柱3,离生，长2.5-2.8厘米，基部被柔毛。果未见。

分布越南北部义静省，生于海拔130-210米的老林中。越南义静省，葵州，中越考察队1790, 中科院昆明植物所标本馆 52815(模式！)

本种形态上相似于越南长叶山茶C krempfii (Gagnep.)Sealy,张宏达（1981)将中越考察队 1790号标本误定为后一种，区别在于本种叶片纸质，较后者宽，背面无腺点 ， 下部沿中脉疏生柔毛；叶柄短，被柔毛，花梗短，子房 3 室。

长叶山茶最近一次于 2015年进行了IUCN濒危等级评估，被评为数据缺乏 Data Deficient（DD）。
