Small tree, twigs glabrous. Leaves: ovate-elliptical, 4.5-5 cm long, 2-2.5 cm wide, with an acute but blunt tip, cuneate base, serrated margins above the middle, entire margins near the base, smooth on both sides, with about 5 pairs of first lateral veins; petiole 0.3-0.5 cm long, smooth. Flowers sessile and pseudo-terminal; bracts are 3-4 and nearly smooth; sepals are round, montanum-shaped, 0.4 cm long, and sparsely hairy; petals are oblong, about 2 cm long and 0.6 cm wide; the tip is concave and smooth; stamens are numerous, with filaments 0.5-1 cm long, smooth and hairless; ovary is slightly spherical, about 0.15 cm long, and hairy; style is about 0.5 cm long and 3-lobed at the tip. Capsule, huge in size, which cracks open when ripe and spreads by gravity.

Distribution: the southernmost part of Taiwan. The range is small and the extent of occurrence is estimated to be less than 12 km2.

Taxonomic notes: This species was merged into Camellia brevistyla in Flora of China (Min and Bartholomew 2007). However, it is characterized by the oblong capsules, glabrous young shoots and almost entire leaf margins, which can be well distinguished from C. brevistyla (Su et al. 2012).

Camellia hengchunensis has most recently been assessed for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2015. Camellia hengchunensis is listed as Near Threatened.

Endemic to Taiwan and is found in the forests around Nanren Mountain on the Hengchun Peninsula.

小乔木,小枝无毛。叶革质,卵状椭圆形,长 4.5-5 厘米,宽 2-2.5 厘米,先端锐形,钝头,基部楔形,中部以上锯齿缘,近基部全缘,两面平滑,第一侧脉约 5 对;叶柄长 0.3-0.5 厘米,平滑。花无梗,假顶生;苞片 3-4,近乎平滑,萼片圆形,僧帽状,长 0.4 厘米,外被疏毛,花瓣长椭圆形,长约 2 厘米,宽约 0.6 厘米;先端凹入,平滑;雄蕊多数,花丝长 0.5-1 厘米,平滑无毛;子房略球形,长约 0.15 厘米,被毛;花柱长约 0.5 厘米,先端 3 裂。蒴果,体型巨大,成熟后开裂,藉由重力传播。

台湾特有种,产于恒春半岛南仁山一带森林中。

恒春山茶最近一次于 2015年进行了IUCN濒危等级评估,被评为近危 Near Threatened(NT)。
