» Description

Camellia miyagii, Subgenus Camellia, Sect. Paracamellia, Chang Hung-ta and Bruce Bartholomew (1984). Camellias, p.56: Camellia miyagii (Koidz.) Mak. & Nem., Fl. Jap., ed., 2, 738. 1931. [Description] This species is very close to C. brevistyla, only the branchlets are glabrous; leaves slightly larger, margins not serrate, petals pubescent; styles 5-6 mm long, upper halfdeeply 3-cleft. Cultivated cultivars are double flowered, styles 3 mm long. [Synonym]Thea miyagii Koidz., Bot. Mag. Tokyo 32: 252. 1918.

Gao Jiyin, Clifford R. Parks, Du Yueqiang, 2005, Collected Species of the Genus Camellia an Illustrated Outline,p.190. Flowers are very similar to C. sasanqua, but may be a little smaller, and the style is reported to be slightly shorter. Leaf blades are elliptic to very broadly elliptic, apex acute to acuminate, base cuneate to obtriangular, 3.9-8.1 cm long and 1.9-3.6 cm wide, mostly glabrous, but occasionally hirsutulous on the lower portion of the upper midvein. Petiole with only a few hairs in the cleft or on the side. Stems sparsely villous to glabrous. Leaves of C. miyagii from the Riu Kiu Islands tend to be wider than those from the plants of C. sasanqua on the main islands, and leaves and stems are much less pubescent. In other regards, C miyagii is very much like C. sasanqua. Distribution: Restricted to the Riu Kiu Islands, Japan; Elevation: 300-400 m; Specific locality: Nago Dake (Mt. Nago) at 345 m, Town of Nago, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan (type locality for C. miyagii).
