[Description] Small tree 5-6 m tall, branchlets with greyish-brown pubescence. Leaves coriaceous, 12-21 cm long, 4-6. 8 cm wide; apices acuminate, acumen obtuse; bases broadly cuneate; dark green above, dull in the dry state, slightly scabrous, base of midveinpubescent; greyish-brown below in the dry state, puberulent; lateral veins 8-10, visible above, slightly protruding below; margins serrulate, teeth separation 2-4 mm; petioles8-10 mm long, brown-pubescent. Flowers solitary, terminal; pedicels 8-10 mm long, pubescent; bracts 3, early deciduous; sepals 7, suborbicular, 4-5 mm long, exteriorpubescent; petals5, ovoid, free, 1-1.2 cm long, pubescent; stamens nearly free, 8-10 mmlong, glabrous; ovaries 3-locular, pubescent; styles ca. 1 cm long, apically 3-cleft, glabrous. Capsules globose, 2 cm in diameter, pubescent, 1-3-locular, 1-2 seeds perlocule, 3-valvate dehiscent, valves 1 mm thick; seeds semiglobose or globose, 1.7 cm in diameter, brown; persistent sepals 5, usually 1.2 cm wide; pedicels 1 cm long.

New branchlets and leaf buds densely pubescent. Leaf blade elliptic to oblong, 6.5–25 × 3–7.5 cm, abaxially pubescent, adaxially glabrous, base cuneate. Flower 2.5–3 cm in diameter. Pedicel ca. 1 cm long, pubescent. Sepals 3–7 × 3.5–7 mm, outside pubescent, inside glabrous. Petals outside pubescent to puberulous, inside glabrous. Ovary densely pubescent. Style apically 3-lobed, glabrous or basally pubescent. Fruit 2–3.5 cm in diameter; pericarp ca. 1 mm thick. Fl. November to January, fr. September to December.
Distribution. China: Guangdong, Hunan.

毛叶茶Camellia ptilophylla Chang, sp. nov. 张宏达,1981. 《山茶属植物的系统研究》第122页。【标本】广东;龙门,南崑山,曾沛73,4011 (花模式 F1.-1:typus! in Univ.sun-yatsen),4012,4013;从化,吕田,狮丈,水尾,山谷疏林,小乔木,高5-6 米,1958年11月9日,邓良8365。【形态特征】小乔木,高5-6米,嫩枝有灰褐色柔毛。叶革质,长圆形,长12-21厘米,宽4-6.8厘米,先端渐尖,尖头钝,基部阔楔形,上面深绿色,干后暗晦,稍祖糙,中脉基部有毛,下面干后灰褐色,有短柔毛,侧脉8-10对,在上面能见,在下面稍突起,边缘有细锯齿,齿刻相隔2-4毫米,叶柄长8-10毫米,有褐色柔毛。花单生于枝顶,花梗长8-10毫米,有毛;苞片3,早落;萼片7片,近圆形,长4-5毫米,背面有柔毛。花瓣5片,倒卵圆形,分离,长1-1.2厘米,被毛。雄蕊近分离,长8-10毫米,无毛。子房3室,有柔毛,花柱长约1厘米,顶端3裂,无毛。蒴果圆球形,直径2厘米,被毛,1-3室,每室有种子1-2粒,3爿裂开,果爿厚1毫米;种子半球形或圆球形,直径1.7厘米,褐色;宿存萼片5片,共宽1.2厘米;果柄长1厘米。
高继银、帕克斯、杜跃强,2005. 《山茶属植物主要原种彩色图集》浙江科学技术出版社,第221页。花白色,花径2.5~3.0厘米,单花顶生或腋生。花柄长5~7毫米,密被短柔毛。苞片和萼片8~10枚,被黄色微毛,苞片早落,萼片宿存。花瓣5~8枚,长1.0~1.8厘米,倒卵圆形,先端基部与雄蕊柱略连生。雄蕊无毛,长约1厘米,外轮花丝基部略合生。雌蕊无毛,长约1厘米,花柱先端3浅裂,子房密被黄色柔毛。花期夏末至秋初。蒴果扁三球形,被短柔毛,直径约2厘米,1~3室,果皮厚1毫米。叶长圆形,先端尖,基部阔楔形,长9.0-21.0厘米,宽3.0~6.0厘米,边缘具细叶齿,薄革质,叶面中脉被毛,叶背中脉凸起,被柔毛。叶柄长8~10毫米,被褐色柔毛。灌木或小乔木,高可达6米,嫩枝和顶芽被灰黄色柔毛,老枝灰褐色。分布:广东省中部的从化至龙门一带,海拔250-500米。可寻地点:广东省龙门南昆山。
