Camellia sasanqua, Subgenus Camellia, Sect. oleifera, Chang Hung-ta and Bruce Bartholomew (1984). Camellias, p.38: Camellia sasanqua Thunb., Fl. Jap., 273. 1784. [Description] This species is very close to C. oleifera only the leaf blades are smaller and slightly thinner, leaf apices obtuse, margins serrulate; sepals glabrous; styles shorter. This species is possibly a geographic variety of C. oleifera. [Distribution] Japan, occasionally cultivated in China. [Synonym] Thea sasanqua (Thunb.) Cels, Cat. Arbres, Arbustes, 35. 1817. \Sasanqua vulgaris Nees in Siebold, Nippon 2: 13. 1832. \Sasanqua odorata Raf., Svlva Tellur., 140. 1838.

Flowers are white, but may be pink or red in cultivated forms, fragrant, 5.0-7.6 cm in diameter, borne at the tips of shoots and additionally in leaf axils; bud set may be abundant. Perules 8-10, drop as the petals unfold, more or less pubescent on the outside, inside glabrous. Petals 7-8, oblanceolate to obovate, 3.0-3.7 cm long, 1.4-2.4 cm wide, (wild forms) cleft at the tip 3-5 mm, outside of outermost petals sometimes slightly villous, inside glabrous, essen-tially free, not connate or adnate with the androecial column. Androecium glabrous, 1.1-1.6 cm long, widely spreading, free, or outer ones fused up to 3 mm, approximately 100 anthers. Gynoecium 1.1-1.5 cm long, 3 styles, mostly glabrous, range from 10%-85% basal fusion, ovary densely tomentose. Blooming season: autumn to early winter. Capsules irregularly globose to pear-shaped, 1.4-2.6 cm long and 1.3-2.2 cm in diameter, villous or partially glabrous at maturity, 3 locules, rarely 2 or 4, each locule with 1-3 seeds, pericarp wall 1-2 mm thick. Leaves variably elliptic, apex acute or variously acuminate to occasionally cuspidate, base cuneate, 2.6-63 cm long, 0.9-3.2 cm wide (often larger in cultivars), serrulate, teeth spaced 2-6 mm apart, upper surface smooth, hirsutulous along the midrib, lower surface smooth, with a few hairs along the midrib. Petioles 4-6 mm long. Shrub or small tree with a single trunk up to 30 cm in diameter, 10 m tall, stems light brown or tan in color, young shoots heavily villous, older branches gray and smooth. Distribution: Southern Shikoku, Kyushu and islands south of Kyushu, Japan; Specific locality: Shikoku Island near the town of Matsuyama, Japan.

高继银、帕克斯、杜跃强,2005. 《山茶属植物主要原种彩色图集》浙江科学技术出版社,第172-174页。花白色,但栽培类型可能出现粉红色或红色,芳香,花径5.0~7.6厘米,顶生或腋生,花芽多。鱗片8~10枚,随着花瓣展开而脱落,鳞片由花柄向上逐渐增大,基部的鱗片卵圆形,外侧略被短柔毛,内侧无毛。花瓣7~8枚,倒披针形至倒心形,长3.0~3.7厘米,宽1.4~2.4厘米(野生类型),先端有长3~5毫米的凹□,外轮花瓣背面有时被长柔毛,内侧无毛,离生或与雄蕊柱贴生。雄蕊 无毛,长1.1~1.6厘米,散射,离生或者外轮花丝基部连生3毫米,雄蕊约100枚。雌蕊长1.1~1.5厘米,花柱3裂,多数无毛,基部10%~85%连生,子房密被绒毛。花期秋季到冬初。蒴果不规则球形至梨形,长1.4~2.6厘 米,直径1.3~2.2厘米,成熟时被长柔毛或部分无毛,3室,少有2室或4室,每室1~3粒种子,果皮厚1~2晕米。叶椭圆形,先端尖或急尖,偶见尾尖,基部楔形,长2.6~6.3厘米,宽0.9~3.2厘米(栽培品种往往较大),边缘具细齿,齿距2~6毫米,叶面光滑,中脉被硬毛,叶背光滑,沿中 脉被稀疏柔毛。叶柄长4~6毫米。灌木或小乔木,高可达10米,干径可达30厘米,树干淡褐色或棕黄色,嫩枝密被长柔毛,老枝灰色,光滑。分布:日本四国南部、九州及九州以南列岛。可寻地 点:日本四国靠近Matsuyama镇附近。
