Puddle & Hanger, 1960, RHS., The Rhododendron and Camellia Yearbook, No.14, p.159: Rose form. Petals very broadly obovate, apex rounded, thick in texture, 5 cm x 5.5cm. Some stamens showing in centre of fully opened flowers. Size, 11 cm in diameter. Colour Crimson 22/1 with darker veining. The flower has a characteristic boss of unopened petals in its centre untill it is almost fully blown. Foliage, deep green, glossy, very variable from narrowly elliptic (15 cm x 6 cm) to broadly elliptic (8 cm x 5 cm), apex short to long acuminate, margins shallowly serrate. Plant habit, compact and bushy. Originated at Nantes, France. This variety was listed for many years by Henri Guichard of Nantes, France during which time it was confused with Paolina Guichardini.
