Orthographic errors: ‘Paolina Guichardina’, ‘Paolina Guichard’, ‘Paolini Guichardini’. Note: Today there is little difference, if any, between plants distributed under this name and Rubescens Major. However it is presumed that they were originally different cultivars as Menoreau lists them sepa­rately in the same catalogue.

Petals very broadly obovate, apex rounded, thick in texture, 5 cm x 5.5cm. Some stamens showing in centre of fully opened flowers. Size, 11 cm in diameter. Colour Crim­son 22/1 with darker veining. The flower has a characteristic boss of unopened petals in its cen­tre untill it is almost fully blown. Foliage, deep green, glossy, very variable from narrowly elliptic (15 cm x 6 cm) to broadly elliptic (8 cm x 5 cm), apex short to long acuminate, margins shallowly serrate. Plant habit, compact and bushy. Originated at Nantes, France. This variety was listed for many years by Henri Guichard of Nantes, France during which time it was con­fused with Paolina Guichardini. Sport: Princess Anne. Received RHS., Award of Merit, 1959. Sport: Rubescens Major Variegated.
