Drayton Franklin Hastie | Camellia japonica 'Drayton Franklin Hastie' | 1908 | Miller, 1908, Country Life in America, with photo, p.498: Light coloured single with erect stamens and slightly reflexed petals. Originated at Magnolia Gardens, Charleston, South Carolina, USA.
Ella Drayton | Camellia japonica 'Ella Drayton' | 1908 | Berckman, 1908, Country Life in America, p.548, with black and white illustration: Dark rose, exquisite form, imbricated with slightly cupped inner petals. A lighter coloured centre and loose non-tiered imbrication. Originated at Magnolia Gardens, Charleston, South Carolina, USA. This name has been erroneously used for a number of cultivars, such as Incarnata and Maria Morren. There is yet a third; a small, formal double, pink fading to lighter pink at the centre which has been reidentified as ‘Ella Drayton (Magnolia Gardens)’. Synonyms: ‘Lady Margaret’, ‘Climax’. Sport: Ella Drayton Variegated.
Julia Drayton | Camellia japonica 'Julia Drayton' | 1908 | Berckmans, P.J., 1908, Country Life in America - "Camellias for Outdoor Culture", photo, p.498: A very large flower, beautifully imbricated; the centre dark crimson, the outer petals a bluish, slate colour. An unusual combination. Overlook Catalogue, 1939-1940: Very large flower, rose type, resembles 'Purple Emperor'. In America this cultivar is erroneously known by the pseudonym 'Mathotiana', under which name its description in SCCS., Camellia Nomenclature, 1958, p.59: Crimson, sometimes with a purple cast. Large rose form to formal double. Vigorous, compact, upright growth. Flowers mid-season to late. Because of its popularity it received many synonyms: 'Purple Dawn', 'Purple Emperor', 'Purple Prince', 'Purple King', 'Purple Empress', 'Mathotiana Purple King', 'Princess Louise', 'William S. Hastie', and, erroneously, 'Mathotiana Rubra' and 'Mathotiana'. Sports include: 'Flowerwood', 'Sultana', 'Red Wonder', 'Red Wonder Variegated', 'Rosea Superba', 'Julia Drayton Variegated', 'Mathotiana Supreme', 'Mathotiana Supreme Variegated'. For colour photos see Nuccio's Nurseries Catalogue, 1951-1952 back cover as 'Mathotiana'; American Camellia Yearbook, 1947, facing p.98 as 'Mathotiana'. In 1978 it received the ACS., "National Camellia Hall of Fame Award" as 'Mathotiana'. This cultivar stemmed from a plant in the Magnolia Gardens, John’s Island, South Carolina and, while it is thought to have originally been imported from Europe, no similar camellia is known among the European ones. Orthographic errors: ‘J.G. Drayton’, ‘J.C. Drayton’. Chinese synonym: 'Masetiana'
Professor Sargent | Camellia japonica 'Professor Sargent' | 1908 | Berkmans, 1908, Country Life in America, p.548: Large, of vivid dark crimson; the centre petals raised, outer petals imbricated. A remarkable anemone-form flower. The plant is of vigorous growth and a free and early bloomer. Rubel, 1928, Azaleas and Camellias from Longview Catalogue, p.4, fig. p.5 as ‘Prof. Sargent’: One of the best of the dark varieties, a rich deep crimson. Flowers are 8 cm in diameter, globular, solid and compactly built, usually has 12 wide, slightly rumpled guard petals while inner petals are long, narrow, curled or rolled and distinctly incurved, having the appearance of an incurved chrysanthemum. Some of the inner petals are occasionally veined with pink or white, but this is seldom visible due to the compact formation of the flower which usually carries 220-230 petals. Early flowering. Fendig, 1949, American Camellia Catalogue: A tight, peony form with many petaloids; shading from rose-pink to dark red, 9-10 cm across x 5 cm deep with 12 outer petals and the centre an irregular mass of petaloids. Leaves dark green, thick, broad-elliptic, 10 cm x 5 cm, acuminate apex on a tall, vigorous, fast growing plant. Sports: Woody Estes, Professor Charles S. Sargent Variegated. The name has collected many orthographic variants including: ‘Prof. Charles Sprague Sargent’, ‘Prof. Charles S. Sargent’ , ‘Prof. C.S. Sargent’, ‘Prof. Charles Sargent’, ‘Professor Charles S. Sargent’, ‘Professor Chas. S. Sargent’, ‘Professor Charles Sprague Sargent’, ‘Professor C.S. Sargent’. The origin of the variety is unknown. Professor Hume believed it may have been imported into USA by Berkman’s Nursery (later Fruitland) from Seidel Nursery, Germany, then to Magnolia Gardens where it was named by the Rev. John G. Drayton for Professor Charles Sprague Sargent, then Director of the Arnold Arboretum. See colour photo, p.112, Macoboy, 1981, The Colour Dictionary of Camellias. Chinese synonym: ‘Sajinte Jiaoshou’.
