Verschaffelt, 1854, Nouvelle Iconographie, Book I, pl.I: It was obtained from seed in Belgium. The arrangement of the petals is like a peony, all rounded, slightly emarginated, concave, hooded, regularly inserted in an imbricated spiral, of a delicate pink colour with pure white margins and fine, carmine veining. Named for the Empress of France, born in Spain, married in 1853 to Napoleon III. Orthographic variants: 'Impératrice Eugenia', 'Empress Eygenie'.
