Courtois, 1833, Magazin d’Horticulture, 1(pt.D):313: Superb. Double. Petals elliptic, concave, of vivid red. Berlèse, 1837, Monographie, ed.1, pp.88, 128: Leaves round-oval, 6 cm x 5 cm, serrate and somewhat undulate, thick, dull green. Flower large, semi-double in the form of a cup, cherry-red with a few stamens amongst small petals. Originated in Italy accord­ing to Berlèse. Synonym: ‘Superbe’. Note: Auguste van Geert, 1856, gives Vandesiana Superba as a synonym, but Berlèse lists them both with different descriptions.
