Camellia amplexicaulis (Pit.) Cohen-Stuart (1916: 67) ≡ Thea amplexicaulis Pitard (1910: 343) Type (lectotype designated by Ming & Zhang 1993: 9):—VIETNAM. Hanoi, May 1886, Balansa 3858 (K!). = Camellia cylindracea Ming (2000: 108), syn. nov. Type:—VIETNAM. Phu Tho: Cau Hai, 23 January 1961, s.n. (holotype KUN No. 0054473, barcode 1205997!, Fig. 1-G, H and I, the image of the holotype is also available at http://kun.kingdonia.org/speciman/ show/id/734955)

Camellia amplexicaulis, Subgenus Thea, Sect. Longipedicellata, Chang Hung-ta and Bruce Bartholomew (1984). Camellias, p.125: Camellia amplexicaulis (Pitard) Cohen-Stuart, Meded. Proefst. Thee 40:67. 1916. [Description] Branchlets glabrous. Leaves elliptic, 15-16cm long, bases auriculate. Pedicels 12 mmlong, persistent; bracts 6-7; sepals 5, persistent; petals 8; filament to 23 length of stamens, puberulent; ovaries pubescent; styles 3-parted, free. [Distribution] northern Vietnam, in the region of the estuary of Yunnan River. [Synonym] Thea amplexicaulis Pitard in Lecomte, Fl. Gen. Indo-Chine 1: 343. 1910.

 C. cylindracea were treated as heterotypic synonyms of C. amplexicaulis by Zhao (2019) https://www.mapress.com/j/pt/article/view/phytotaxa.419.1.7/34132. as follows:

Nomenclatural notes:—Pitard (1910: 344) cited “Balansa, Bon” in the protologue of T. amplexicaulis. Ming & Zhang (1993: 9) designated B. Balansa 3858 at K as the lectotype of T. amplexicaulis without citing any collection from P though seven syntypes of this species were conserved at P (Balansa 3858: one sheet without barcode or herbarium number, the other bearing barcode P04500319; Balansa 4826: P04500315 and P04500316; Bon 9113: P04500321, P04500322 and P04500324). A specimen (P04500319 of Balansa 3858, the image of the isolectotype is available at https://science.mnhn.fr/institution/mnhn/collection/p/item/p04500319), bearing a drawing of a dissected flower and Pitard’s manuscript note “Thea amplexicaulis sp. n.”, is found at P and this sheet could serve as the lectotype more appropriately. Unfortunately, the lectotypification of T. amplexicaulis made by Ming & Zhang (1993: 9) must be followed under Art. 9.19 of the ICN. A single specimen of Balansa 3858, consisting of leaf and flower fragments, was found at K, which acts as the lectotype of T. amplexicaulis.

Camellia cylindracea was not validly published by Ming (1994: 343) because the author failed to use “one of the words ‘typus’ or ‘holotypus’, or its abbreviation, or its equivalent in a modern language” to indicate the type (Art. 40.6 of the ICN). The species was, however, later validly published by the same author (Ming 2000: 108).

Morphological notes:—Ming (2000) suggested that C. cylindracea differed from other Camellia by its cylindrical ovary (7 mm long, ca. 3 mm in diam., translated from the original Chinese: “长7毫米,粗约3毫米”; Ming 2000: 110) and a fused style with five arms at apex (Fig. 1-G). Those character states were valued by Ming so much so that he established the monotypic sect. Cylindriea Ming (2000: 108) based on the species. One dissected flower is attached on the holotype of C. cylindracea at KUN (barcode 1205997). The length of its ovary is, however, ca. 4 mm—beneath the ovary, it is the attachment region for petals and filaments, which is ca. 3 mm long and its length cannot be counted to that of the ovary (Fig. 1-G). Moreover, another gynoecium of the holotype bears four distinct styles (Fig. 1-H and I), and the isotype, KUN 1206000 (its image is available at http://kun.kingdonia.org/speciman/show/id/734958), has a dissected flower bud that bears a fused style with three arms at apex. The fused style may be a morphological variation within the same individual or an artificial effect introduced by the specimen processing (Fig. 1-G).

The flower of C. amplexicaulis usually bears three styles (Ming 2000: 93). However, the number of styles in a flower of C. amplexicaulis can vary among different individuals. I found that there were flowers bearing two, three and four styles of this species (see Fig.1-D, E and F, respectively; Zhao 197 at TCD). By contrast, the flowers of C. cylindracea bear three, four or five styles according to its holotype (KUN 1205997; Fig. 1-G, H and I) and isotype (KUN 1206000), suggesting an unstable state of this character even within a single individual. Apart from the discussion above, it is difficult to find any other substantial morphological difference between C. cylindracea and C. amplexicaulis. Therefore, C. cylindracea is treated as a new heterotypic synonym of C. amplexicaulis.

Camellia amplexicaulis is endemic to Vietnam. It is widely planted as a horticultural shrub in the gardens of the North Vietnam, South and Southwest China.
