» Description

Camellia assimilis, Subgenus Metacamellia, Sect. Eriandria, Chang Hung-ta and Bruce Bartholomew (1984). Camellias, p.205: Camellia assimilis Champ. ex Benth. in Hook., Journ. Bot. 3: 309. 1851. [Description] The leaf shape of this is very similar to C. caudata, but the flowers are 3 cm long, fila-ment tube 3/4 the filament length, pedicels shorter, sepals longer, capsules 2-3 locular. [Distribution] Islands of the coast of central Guangdong and Guangxi. [Synonym] Thea assimilis (Champ.)Seem., Trans. Linn. Soc. 22: 349. 1859. \Camelliastrum assimile (Champ.)Nakai, Journ. Jap. Bot. 16: 700. 1940.

Flowers are white, 2.5-3.0 cm in diameter, borne at the tips of shoots and in leaf axils; bud set may be abundant. Pedicels about 12 mm long. Bracts 5-7 and Sepals 5, both with pubescent surfaces and ciliate margins. Petals 7-8, about 1.5 cm long, broadly obovate with rounded tips, fused at the base with the staminal column. Androecium 1.5 cm long, villose on free portion of filaments, outer layer of stamens fused from the base into a cup up to 1.1 cm long. Gynoecium1.0 cm long, 3 tomentose styles, mostly fused, slightly cleft at tip, ovary tomentose. Blooming season: midwinter. Capsules 1.3 cm long, pubescent, 2-3 locules. Leaves elliptic or oblong elliptic, tip acuminate to caudate, base cuneate, 4.0-7.0 cm long, 1.2-2.5 cm wide, margin serrulate, upper surface smooth and glabrous, lower surface finely pubescent on midrib becoming glabrescent. Petioles 2-4 mm long, pubescent. Shrub up to 3 m tall, young shoots pubescent becoming glabrescent, young leaves bronze-red, older branches smooth and gray in color. Distribution: Coastal area of Guangdong Province, Rong County of Guangxi and Hong kong of China; Elevation: 450-700 m; Specific locality: Mt. Victoria, Hong Kong, China.
