[Description] Flowers large, 10-14 cm in diameter, white; bracts and sepals 12, to 5 cm long completely enclosing the capsule; petals 8, stamens connate for 5-6 mm, styles apically, 5-parted. Capsules 5-valvate dehiscent, seeds contain oil that could be of economic use.

Flowers are white, sometimes with a pink tint on the edge, 10.0-14,0 cm in diameter, borne singly at the tip of the shoot. Perules persistent, 12-13 in number, densely to-mentose outside, sparsely so inside, thick, extremely coriaceous. Petals 9-10, 6.0-8.5 cm long, 3.0-4.5 cm wide, oblong obovate to obcordate, cleft at tip up to 1 cm, trace of pubescence on outside of exterior petals only, basally connate and adnate to the androecium up to 0.5-1.0 cm from the base. Androecium glabrous, 3.0-3.5 cm long, outer layer fused into a cup up to 1 cm long, over 200 anthers. Gynoecium 3.0-4.0 cm long, 5 styles, pubescent at the base, fused from the base 15%-67%, ovary tomentose. Blooming season: autumn. Capsules globose, 4.0-6.0 cm in diameter, rust-colored and scaly at maturity, pubescent, surrounded by the perules, 5 locules, pericarp wall 0.7-1.0 cm thick. Seeds usually more than 1 cm long. Leaves oblong-elliptic to broadly elliptic in shape, tip acuminate, base rounded, 8.0-15.0 cm long, 2.0-5.5 cm wide, margin serrulate, teeth spaced 2-3 mm apart, upper surface glabrous to sparsely villous on the midvein, veins deeply impressed, lower surface midvein nearly glabrous to sparsely villous with hair absent or slightly scattered over the blade, tiny cork-warts, veins raised. Petioles thick, 3-12 mm long, sparsely to densely villous. Tree up to 8 m tall, young shoots villous, becoming glabrescent, twigs brown, older branches smooth and gray in color. Distribution: Wooded ravines in Hong Kong, China, and in ever¬green forests in Lufeng, Haifeng and Fengkai Counties in Guangdong Province, China; Elevation: 150-650 m; Specific locality: Shing Mun Arboretum, Tai Mo Shan, New Territory, Hong Kong, China.

Austro-Sin. 7933。【形态特征】这个种的花大，直径10-14厘米，白色，苞及萼片12片，最长达5厘米，完全包着蒴果；花瓣8片，雄蕊连生5-6毫米，花往顶端5裂，蒴果5爿裂开，种子含油，可供食用。

高继银、帕克斯、杜跃强，2005. 《山茶属植物主要原种彩色图集》浙江科学技术出版社，第203-204页。花白色，有时瓣缘泛粉红色，花径10.0~14.0厘米，单花顶生。鳞片12~13枚，宿存，外面密被柔毛，里面被稀疏柔毛，厚革质。花瓣9~10枚，长6.0~ 8.5厘米，宽3.0~ 4.5厘米，长倒卵形至倒心形，先端有1厘米凹缺，外轮瓣背略被柔毛，基部与雄蕊柱连生0.5~1.0厘米。雄蕊无毛，长3.0~3.5厘米，外轮花丝基部连生形成1厘米长短管，雄蕊数200枚以上。雌蕊长3.0~4.0厘米，花柱5裂，基部连生15%~67%,被毛，子房被绒毛。花期秋季。蒴果球形，直径4.0~ 6.0厘米，铁锈色，成熟时基部包裹鳞片，被柔毛，5室，果皮厚0.7~1.0厘米。种子长1厘米以上。叶长椭圆形至阔椭圆形，先端渐尖，基部圆形，长8.0~15.0厘米，宽 2.0~5.5厘米，边缘具齿，齿锯2~3毫米，叶面主脉被毛或稀疏被毛，叶脉明显凹陷，叶背略被稀疏长毛，中脉近无毛或有稀疏长毛，叶脉凸起，有小木栓瘤，叶柄粗，长3~12毫米，稀疏或密集被粗毛。乔木，高可达8米，嫩枝开始被柔毛，而后变秃净，枝条褐色，老枝光滑，灰白色。分布：中国香港特区和广东省陆丰、海丰、封开等县 的林下沟壑中，海拔150-650米。可寻地点:中国香港特 区新界大雾山城门标本林。
