[Description] Leaves 16 cm long, long-caudate, lateral veins 8-9 pairs. This species differs from C. mairei by having very large leaves, the latter has short leaf blades, apices abruptly acute, only 5-6 pairs of lateral veins and capsules small. [Synonym]Camellia mairei var. lapidea (Wu) Sealy, Rev. Gen. Camellia, 174. 1958.

Flowers are deep pink or red, about 6 cm in diameter, borne at the tips of shoots and in leaf axils. Perules 9. deciduous afterflowering, outer surface of larger perules appressed villous, inside glabrous. Petals 6-7,3.0-5.0 cm long, broadly ovate to slightly obovate, emarginate, cleft up to 3 mm, fused from the base with the staminal column up to 15 mm. Androecium pubescent, approximate 3 cm long, outer stamens fused from the base into a column up to 2.0 cm long, approximately 150 stamens. Gynoecium about 3 cm long, 3 pubescent styles slightly divided at the tip, ovary densely tomentose. Blooming season: winter. Capsules subglobose, 4.0-5.0 cm in diameter, 3 locules, pericarp wall 1.2-1.5 cm thick.Leaves elliptic, tip cuspidate to caudate, base cuneate, 9.5-15.0 cm long, 3.0-4.5 cm wide, sharply serrulate, upper surface with midrib and veins markedly impressed, glabrous, lower surface with midrib and veins raised, loosely villous, particularly near the midrib. Petiole 8-11 mm long, glabrous. Shrub or small tree up to 5 m tall, young shoots tan-gray, glabrous, older branches smooth and gray in color. Distribution: Mixed woods and thickets in western Guangdong and southern Guizhou Provinces and Guangxi; Elevation; 300-1,500 m;Specific locality: Dayaoshan,Guangxi, China.

高继银、帕克斯、杜跃强,2005. 《山茶属植物主要原种彩色图集》浙江科学技术出版社,第47页。花深粉红色或红色,花径约6厘米,顶生或腋生。鳞片9枚,随花朵开放而脱落,外面大鱗片被长柔毛,里面无毛。花瓣6~7枚,长3.0~5.0厘米,阔卵圆形至倒卵形,先端凹缺3毫米,基部与雄蕊柱连生15毫米。雄蕊被短柔毛,长约3厘米,外轮花丝基部连生形成2厘米长短管,雄蕊数约150枚。雌蕊长约3厘米,花柱先端3裂,被短柔毛,子房密被绒毛。花期冬季。蒴果近球形,直径4.0~5.0厘米,3室,果皮厚1.2~1.5厘米。叶椭圆形,先端硬尖至尾尖,基部楔形,长9.5~15.0厘米,宽3.0~4.5厘米,边缘具尖齿,叶面中脉和侧脉明显凹陷,无毛,叶背主脉和侧脉凸起,被稀疏长柔毛,特别是中脉附近被毛明显。叶柄长8~11毫米。灌木或小乔木,高可达5米,嫩枝灰黄色,无毛,老枝光滑,灰色。分布:广东省西部、贵州省南部和广西壮族自治区(生于常绿或混交林下),海拔300-1500米。可寻地点:广西壮族自治区大瑶山。
