Flowers are pink to light-red, rarely white, 8.0-10.0 cm in diameter, borne singly at the tips of shoots. Perules 8-9, grey-pubescent on both sides. Petals 6-7, 4.0-5.3 cm long, obovate, tip rounded or slightly emarginate, united at the base with the stami-nal column. Androecium glabrous, 2.5-3.0 cm long, outer layer fused from the base into a short tube 5 mm long. Gynoecium glabrous, 2.0-3.0 cm long, 3 styles, slightly divided at the tip, ovary tomentose. Blooming season: spring. Capsules oblate, 7.0-9.0 cm in diameter, 3 locules, pericarp soft, the wall 1.5 cm thick. Seeds glabrous, oil content 47.8%-50.7%.Leaves elliptic, tip short-acuminate, base broadly cu-neate or rounded, 9.0-14.0 cm long, 3.0-7.0 cm wide, margin thinly and densely serrulate, thickly coriaceous, upper surface with lateral veins slightly impressed, lower surface with midrib slightly raised, glabrous, cork-warts. Petiole 10-13 mm long. Shrub or small tree up to 7 m tall, young shoots glabrous, older branches smooth, yellow-brown in color. Distribution: Xupu, Chenxi and Huaihua in western Hunan Province; Elevation: 600-1,000 m;Specific locality: Maoliyyan,Fenglin Village, Tongxihe Township, Xupu County, Hunan Province, China.

高继银、帕克斯、杜跃强，2005. 《山茶属植物主要原种彩色图集》浙江科学技术出版社，第54页。花多为粉红色至淡红色，偶见白色，花径8.0~10.0厘米,单花顶生。鱗片8~9枚，两面被灰色短柔毛。花瓣6~7枚，长4.0~5.3厘米，倒卵形，先端圆或略凹缺，基部连生。雄蕊无毛，长2.5~3.0厘米，外轮花丝基部连生，形成5毫米长短管。雌蕊无毛，长2.0~3.0厘米，花柱先端3裂，子房被绒毛。花期春季。蒴果扁球形，直径7.0~9.0厘米，3室，果皮松软，厚1.5厘米。种子无毛，含油率为47.8%~50.7%。叶椭圆形，先端短尖，基部楔形或圆形，长9.0~14.0厘米，宽3.0~7.0厘米，边缘具细密叶齿，厚革质，叶面侧脉略凹陷，叶背无毛，有黑腺点，主豚略凸起。叶柄长10~13毫米。灌木或小乔木，高可达7米，嫩枝无毛，顶芽被毛，老枝光滑，灰黄色。分布：湖南省西部的溆浦、辰溪、怀化一带，海拔600-1000米。可寻地点:湖南省淑浦县统溪河乡枫林村毛里奄。
