[Description] Shrub or small tree 4 m tall; branchlets glabrous, dark brown. Leaves coriaceous, elliptic, 9-12 cm long 4-5. 5 cm wide, apices abruptly acute with the extreme tip slightlyobtuse, bases rounded or obtuse; dark green above in the dry state, slightly shiny ordull, glabrous; brown below, glabrous; lateral veins 6-7 pairs; margins serrate; petioles1-1. 5 cm long, flattened, glabrous. Flowers terminal, sessile, red, 9 cm in diameter, 5-6cm long; bracts and sepals 10, lower 3-4 perules semiorbicular, 3-6 mm long, 4-9 mmwide, exterior sericeous; inner perules nearly orbicular, 1.5-2 cm long, sericeous, deciduous after flowering; petals 8-9, outer 2-3 nearly orbicular, 2-3. 5 cm long, backsericeous; other 6-7 petals broadly obovoid, 4-5. 5 cm long, 3-4 cm wide, back glabrous, apices emarginate or rounded, basally connate for ca. 1. 5 cm; stamens 3.5-4 cm long, basal half of outer whorl connate into a short tube, upper half free, pubescent; filamenttube pubescent, inner filament whorl completely pubescent; ovaries brown pubescent; styles 3-3. 5 cm long glabrous, apical 1 cm 3-cleft. Capsules globose, not yet ripe, withbrown pubescence, 3-locular, 2 seeds per locule, pericarp thickly woody.

Flowers are red, 8.0-9.0 cm in diameter, borne in multiples at the tips of twigs, but rarely in leaf axils. Perules 10, outside sericeous. Petals 8-9, 4.0-4.5 cm long, 3.0-4.0 cm wide, suborbicular, tip broadly rounded, or slightly emarginate, fused with the staminal column at the base up to approximately 15 mm. Androecium slightly pubescent, 3.0-4.0 cm long, outer layer of stamens fused into a cup from the base. Gynoecium 3.0-3.5 cm long, tip deeply dissected into 3 parts, ovary brown-tomentose. Blooming season: spring.Capsules subglobose, pale-brown, slightly rough on the surface,3.0- 4.0 cm in diameter, 3 locules. Leaves elliptic, tip acuminate or acute, base orbicular or obtuse,8.0- 13.0 cm long, 4.0-5.5 cm wide, margin serrulate, thickly coriaceous, upper surface with lateral veins slightly impressed, glabrous, lower surface with lateral veins slightly raised, glabrous. Petiole 10-15 mm long, glabrous. Shrub or small tree up to 4 m tall, young shoots glabrous, older branches smooth, brown in color. Distribution: Emei Mountain in southern Sichuan to Chishui County in northern Guizhou; Elevation: 1,000-1,600 m; Specific locality: Heiping, Baimugang Forest Farm, Huaxi Town, Hongya County, Meishan City, Sichuan Province, China.

Sunyatsen)，55133；南川，毛坪，熊济华，周子林91288；同地，北京植物所四川经济植物调查队819，海拔1500-1800米；同地，海拔1600米，郑止善450。【形态特征】灌木或小乔木，高4米，嫩枝无毛，深褐色。叶革质，椭圆形，长9-12厘米，宽4-5.5厘米，先端急短尖，尖头略钝，基部圆或钝，上面干后深绿色，略 发亮或稍暗晦，无毛，下面褐色，无毛，侧脉6-7对，边缘有锯齿，叶柄长1-1.5厘米，扁平，无毛。花顶生，红色，长5-6厘米，直径9厘米，无柄；苞片及萼片10片，下部3-4片半圆形，长3-6毫米，宽4-9毫米，背面有绢毛，其余近 圆形，长1.5-2厘米，有绢毛，花开放后脱落。花瓣8-9片，最外侧2-3片近圆形，长3-3.5厘米，背有绢毛，其余6-7片阔倒卵圆形，长4-5.5厘米，宽3-4厘米，背无毛，先端凹入或圆形，基部连生约1.5厘米。雄蕊长3.5-4厘米，外轮雄蕊下半部连生成短管，上半部游离，有柔毛，花丝管亦有毛，内轮花丝全部有毛。子房有褐毛，花柱长3-3.5厘米，无毛，先端1厘米3裂；蒴果圆球形，未成熟，被褐毛，3室，每室有种子2粒；果皮厚木质。
