Camellia pyriparva Orel & Curry. First published in Long-term Study and Tax. Rev. Camellia amplexicaulis: 77 (2017). TYPE: Vietnam. Vinh Phuc Province; cultivated specimen, 10. 7. 2015, G. Orel & A. S. Curry TD 58 (holotype, QBG).

Because of their superficial resemblance to C. amplexicaulis (Pitard) Cohen Stuart the C. pyriparva Orel & Curry, all materials were collected in belief that they were C. amplexicaulis (Pitard) Cohen Stuart. However, the in-situ evaluation established the existence of a number of morphological dissimilarities. Most importantly, these pertained to the structure of mature flowers and mature fruit. The flowers of C. pyriparva Orel & Curry (light pink in colour, with white petal margins) possessed only 9 perianth parts. Pitard’s 1910 descriptor stipulates 15 perianth parts per flower for his then new type species (Pitard 1910). Further, Pitard (1910) describes the flowers as ‘purple’，which implies that he was describing a well dried specimen. There is no mention of the white petal margins. The fruit of C. pyriparva Orel & Curry is large (up to 7.0 cm diam.) and distinctly pyriform. In contrast Pitard (1910) described a globose fruit capsule with 3 sutures however the fruit size was not included in the descriptor. The fruit of C. pyriparva Orel & Curry possesses 6 sutures and is distinctly 6-lobate. The fruit of C. amplexicaulis Pitard is described as smooth and possibly glabrous. The fruit of C. pyriparva Orel & Curry possesses irregularly distributed areas of brownish warts, mostly at its base. Further, Pitard (1910) describes the capsule of T. amplexicaulis Pitard as being very woody. This is not the case with C. pyriparva Orel & Curry.
