[Description] Shrub or small tree, young branchlets glabrous. Leaves coriaceous, oblong, 9-12 cmlong, 2. 8-4 cm wide, both ends acute, both surfaces shiny, lateral veins 6-8 pairs, margins serrulate, petioles 1-1. 5 cm long. Flowers light pink; bracts and sepals 9, coriaceous, to 2. 5 cm long, densely yellowish-brown pubescent; petals 6-7, 5 cm longdensely pubescent; stamens 3 cm long, glabrous; ovaries densely pubescent, styles 3-cleft. Capsules subglobose, 6-7 cm in diameter, pericarp ca. 1 cm thick. Similar to C. cryptoneura, but the latter has leaves oblong to oblanceolate, bracts andsepals pubescent, back of petals glabrous, capsules smaller, pericarp thinner.

Flowers are pink to light-red, 6.0-7.5 cm in diameter, borne singly at the tips of shoots. Perules 8-9, outer surface yellowish-villous. Petals 6-7, 4.0-5.0 cm long, 2.0-3.0 cm wide, obovate, tip emarginate, outer surface slightly yellowish-villous, slightly united with the stamens at the base. Androecium glabrous, 2.5-3.0 cm long, outer filaments fused from the base into a short tube. Gynoecium 2.0-2.7 cm in length, 3 styles slightly divided at the tip, ovary tomentose. Blooming season: spring. Capsules subglobose, 6.0-8.0 cm in diameter, 3 locules. Leaves oblong, tip sharply acuminate, base cuneate, 9.0-13.0 cm long, 3.0-4.0 cm wide, margin thinly and densely serrulate, upper surface with lateral veins slightly sunken, lower midrib and lateral veins slightly raised. Petiole 12-15 mm long. Lee, sp. nov. 张宏达,1981. 《山茶属植物的系统研究》第77页。【标本】湖南:宁远,九嶷山,海拔1100米,山沟湿润处,萧尊孝65001 (模式Typus!in Hunan Teachers College),。【形态特征】灌木至小乔木,幼枝无毛。叶革质,长圆形,长9-12厘米,宽2.8-4厘米,两端尖,两面发亮,侧脉6-8对,边缘有细锯齿,叶柄长1-1.5厘米。花淡红,苞及萼9片,革质,最长2.5厘米,被黄褐色粗毛;花瓣6-7片,长5厘米,被粗毛;雄蕊长3厘米,无毛,子房被粗毛,花柱3裂。蒴果近球形,直径6-7毫米,果皮厚约1厘米。近似隐脉红山茶c. cryptoneura Chang,后者叶片长圆状倒披针形,苞及萼被柔毛,花瓣背面无毛,蒴果较小,果皮亦较薄。
