The specimen was first discovered by Lau Quoc Thuong in January 2016 in Da Huoai district, Lam Dong. In August 2016, the group of authors Luong Van Dung, Le Anna, Nguyen Thi Hanh, Nguyen Thi Lieu published in Dalat University Journal of Science with the scientific name Camellia thuongiana, the Vietnamese name is Tra Thuong, named after Mr. Lau Quoc Thuong, the first person to discover the sample and the person with many successes in breeding Vietnamese indigenous camellia.

该标本由 Lau Quoc Thuong 于 2016 年 1 月在林同省 Da Huoai 县首次发现。2016 年 8 月，由 Luong Van Dung、Le Anna、Nguyen Thi Hanh、Nguyen Thi Lieu 组成的作者小组在《大叻大学科学杂志》（Dalat University Journal of Science）上发表文章，学名为 Camellia thuongiana，越南语名称为 Tra Thuong，以第一个发现该标本的人和在培育越南本土山茶方面屡获成功的刘国顺（Lau Quoc Thuong ）先生的名字命名。
