The specimen was discovered by Balansa in 1887 in Ba Vi Mountain, North Vietnam. In 1910 in the book Flore Générale de l'Indo-Chine, author C.J. Pitard first published it under the scientific name Thea tonkinensis. In 1916, in the book Mededeelingen van het Proefstation voor Thee, author C. P. Cohen Stuart changed the scientific name to Camellia tonkinensis, the Vietnamese name is Northern Tea, this is one of the earliest yellow-flowered camellia species discovered in the world.

67, 1916. 张宏达，1981. 《山茶属植物的系统研究》第88页。【标本】，分布于越南北部。【形态特征】嫩枝无毛，叶椭圆形，长9-13厘米，宽2.5-5厘米，薄纸质，下面沿中肋有微毛，花柄长7毫米，苞及萼6片，子房有毛，花柱3条，离生，蒴果三球形，压扁，宽3.8厘米。
该标本由巴兰萨于 1887 年在越南北部的 Ba Vi 山发现。1910 年，在《Flore Générale de l'Indo-Chine 》一书中，作者皮塔德（C.J. Pitard）首次以学名 “Thea tonkinensis ”发表了该植物。1916 年，在《Mededeelingen van het Proefstation voor Thee》一书中，作者 C. P. Cohen Stuart 将其学名改为 Camellia tonkinensis，越南语名称为 Northern Tea，这是世界上最早发现的黄花山茶品种之一。
