Flowers are white, often with a red spot on the outermost petals, slightly fragrant, 3.2-4.2 cm in diameter, borne in multiples at the tips of shoots and in leaf axils; bud set usually abundant. Bracts 4, persistent. Sepals 5, persistent, ciliate hairs on margins. Petals 6, 22-2.6 cm long, 2.0-2.1 cm wide, obovate or obcordate in shape, cleft at the tip up to 2 mm, fused from the base with the staminal column up to 3-5 mm. Androecium glabrous, 1.6-2.1 cm in length, outer layer of stamens fused from the base into a cup 8-10 mm long, approximately 40 stamens. Gynoecium 1.7-2.2 cm long, 3 glabrous styles, 60%-80% fused from the base, ovary glabrous. Blooming season: winter to spring. Capsules ovoid with a small beak at the point of style attachment, 1.0-1.3 cm long, 0.9-1.1 mm in diameter, glabrous, pericarp wall about 1 mm thick. Leaves elliptic, tip acute to acuminate, base cuneate to rounded, 1.3-4.2 cm long, 0.7-2.3 cm wide, margin serrulate, upper surface smooth, with pubescent midrib, lower surface smooth, with midrib slightly raised. Petiole 1-3 mm long, variably pubescent. Shrub or small tree up to 7 m tall, young shoots pubescent, older branches smooth and rust-gray in color. Distribution: Nenggao Mountain and Nantou and Xinzhu Counties, Taiwan Province of China; Elevation: 2,000-2,400 m; Spe-cific locality: Nantou County, Taiwan Province of China. This cultivar was awarded as an AGM (Award of Garden Merit) plant by the Royal Horticultural Society  in 2012 at H4 rate (hardy: average winter; -10°C to -5°C).
