» Description

Camellia vidalii Rosmann. First published in Adansonia, sér. 3, 21: 319 (1999). Sect. Piquetia. Gao Jiyin, Clifford R. Parks, Du Yueqiang, 2005, Collected Species of the Genus Camellia an Illustrated Outline,p.228.

It was first described in Adansonia (in French with a Latin diagnosis) in 1999, a valid publication. An English description of this species was subsequently presented in the International Camellia Journal in 2000. The species was distinguished by its notably large leaves (35–40 cm long and 6–8 cm wide), long pedicels (3.5–4.5 cm long), persistent bracteoles, yellow flowers, and 4–5-loculated ovaries and styles.C. vidalii was initially provisionally classified in sect. Archecamellia Sealy by Rosmann in 1999, who suggested that it was closely related to C. krempfii (Gagnep.) Sealy and C. longissima Hung T. Chang. In the following year, Rosmann definitively moved C. vidalii into sect. Thea ser. Quinquelocularis Hung T. Chang. However, in the final paragraph of the same article, the author reversed his position, reclassifying it in sect. Archecamellia. Section Thea is distinguished by the caducous bracteoles (2 or 3), white petals, and a solitary style, characteristics that are absent in C. vidalii. It can be concluded that the placement of C. vidalii in sect. Thea is inappropriate. The evidence supports the placement of C. vidalii in sect. Piquetia, a classification that accounts for the large leaves, long pedicels, persistent bracteoles, yellow petals, (4-)5-loculed ovaries, and free styles.

Zhao (2019) reduced C. vidalii to the synonym of Camellia langbianensis. However, Hoi et al (2021) by careful comparison of the protologues and type specimens as well as our new collections including fresh materials, it is indicated that C. vidalii differs from C. langbianensis in the morphological characters of leaves and flowers. It is better to treat them as independent species at moment, and the further studies is necessary.
