[Description] From the appearance of the flower there is no doubt that this species belongs tosubgen. Camellia sect. Camellia. It blooms between February and March, but the fruit isnot yet mature in May; pericarp thick and woody, 1-2 cm thick; usually 3-locular; withremnants of 10 bracts and sepals, to 1.4 cm long, brown pubescent; leaves small, lanceolate or oblong, lateral veins obscure. [Synonym]Yunnanea xylocarpa Hu, Acta Phytotax. Sin. 5: 280. 1956.

Perules 9-10, partially persistent, glabrous. Petals 6-7,3.0-3.5 cm long, 2.0-2.5 cm wide, obovate, outer surface pubescent, united from the base with the staminal column up to 12 mm. Androecium glabrous, 1.6-2.1 cm long, outer filaments fused at the base into a short tube 20 mm long. Gynoecium 1.5-2.0 cm long, 3 styles slightly divided at the tip, ovary tomentose. Blooming season: spring. Capsules subglobose, surface reddish-brown, 5.0-6.0 cm in diameter, 3-5 locules, pericarp hard and woody, the wall about 2 cm thick. Seeds glabrous. Leaves elliptic, tip acuminate, base broadly cuneate, 5.0-11.0 cm long,2.0-3.8 cm wide, margin thinly serrulate, upper surface with midrib and lateral veins impressed, lower surface with midrib slightly raised. Petiole 6-10 mm long. Tree up to 6 m tall, young shoots glabrous, older branches smooth, gray-white in color. Distribution: Jingshajiang Val-ley from southern Sichuan Province to northern Yunnan Province;Elevation: 1,800-2,400 m; Specific locality: Fengying Town, Huili County, Sichuan Province, China.

木果红山茶Camellia xylocarpa (Hu) Chang, comb. nov. 张宏达,1981. 《山茶属植物的系统研究》第71页。【标本】云南:风庆(顺宁),海拔2400米,小乔木,高6米,花红,1938527日俞德浚16021(模式)。【形态特征】从花的形态看,它无疑地是山茶亚属中红花山茶组(Subgen. CaiueliiaSeect. Camellia)的种类,它在2-3月间开花,5月果实尚未成熟,果皮厚木质,厚1-2厘米,通常3室,尚有残留萼片及苞片10片,最长达1.4厘米,被褐毛;叶片为细小披针形或长圆形,侧脉不明显。
