Hongwutai

Hongwutai (C. japonica 'Lady Kay' × C. retiulata 'Massee Lane'). Liu Xinkai et al. 2023, Illustrations of the New Camellia Hybrids that Bloom Year-round, Zhejiang Science and Technology Publishing House, p.504. HC-05-2., a cross seedling (KAIS-No.2) of C. japonica 'Lady Kay' × C. retiulata 'Massee Lane'. Flowers bright red, semi-double form, large to very large size, 10.5-13.5cm across and 5.0cm deep with 12-14 petals arranged in 2 rows, petals broad obovate and big wavy, stamens slightly united at the base, bloom dense. Leaves green, heavy leathery, broad elliptical, margins sharply and densely serrate. Plant compact, branches dense and growth vigorous. Blooms from late-winter to the spring of following year. The cultivar name means “Red Stage”.
