Hongyun Shanguang

Hongyun Shanguang (C. azalea x C. japonica ‘Scentsation’). Liu Xinkai et al. 2023, Illustrations of the New Camellia Hybrids that Bloom Year-round, Zhejiang Science and Technology Publishing House, p.144. HA-65-2., a cross seedling (DXS-No.4) of C. azalea x C. japonica ‘Scentsation’. Flowers peach red with white stripes, semi-double to rose-double form, small to medium size, 7.0-8.5cm across and 5.0cm deep with 28-30 petals arranged in 4 rows, petals broad obovate, rolled outward, a few central small petals erected, stamens united into a column at the base, flowers fall whole. Leaves dark green, heavy leathery, elliptic, cuneate at the base, margins thinly serrate. Plant upright, growth vigorous. Starts to bloom from late-summer, fully blooms from autumn to winter and sporadically in spring. The cultivar name means “Lightening Red Clouds”.
