This 8-year-old C. japonica chance seedling of ‘Royal Velvet’ first bloomed in 2011. It was originated, registered and propagated by Pat B. Johnson of Cairo, Georgia, USA. Bloom: The large sized 12.7cm x 10.1cm semi-double to rose form double form flower is dark velvet red. It has yellow anthers and pink filaments. The blooms have fimbriation and fall in one piece. Plant: The plant habit is upright. The growth rate is average. The plant is suitable for landscaping and exhibition uses. Leaf: The medium green leaves are highly serrated and average 10.1cm x 6.3cm. Bloom season: Midseason to late.
