van Houtte Catalogue, 1854-1855, 53:46: Enormous imbricated, dark red flower with wide, pure white stripes; formed like Princesse Baciocchi. [from] Donkelaar. Verschaffelt, 1856, Nouvelle Iconographie, Book VI, pl.I. A seedling of Alexander Donkelaar, Chief Gardener of the Botanic Gardens of Ghent, Belgium, who put it up for sale two years ago. A ‘perfection’ distinguished by the star-shaped imbrication of its lanceolate petals, full or scarsely emarginate, of a vivid rose colour, intersected by a white strip. Le Texnier, 1911, pp.20, 28 says ‘Grown from seed by Donkelaar, 1847 and sold commercially in France in 1853 by Miellez of Lille.’ The name was erroneously used as a synonym for L’Avvenire.
