Zhou Li, 2011, Illustrated Handbook for Sichuan Camellias, p.214. Plants vigorous, open, abundantly branching. Leaves green, heavy texture, elliptic, with apex acuminate and irregular, venation convex, serrate shallow, measured 7 cm to 9 cm across by 3.5 cm to 5 cm wide. Calyxes opening. Flowers dark pink, diameter 8 cm to 10 cm. Petals elliptic to rounded, spoon shaped, heavy texture, imbricated loosely as an opening pine cone. Petaloids by a few stamens, with occasional white stripes, mixed with normal stamens, 20 segments, semi-double, medium floral abundance. Blooms February to April, at full blooming March.  Key points of identification: Flower dark pink, petals as spoon shaped, heavy texture, imbricated loosely as an opening pine cone.
