Leaves coriaceous, elliptic, 9-12 cm long, 4-6 cmwide, apices acute, bases broadly cuneate or subrotund, lateral veins 6-7 pairs, upperhalf of margin serrate, petioles 1-1. 5 cm long. Flowers light red, terminal, sessile, 4-6cmin diameter; bracts and sepals 9-10, broadly obovate, coriaceous, to 1. 8 cm long, grayish-white pubescent; petals 6-8, basally connate, 2-3 cm long; stamens in 5-6 series, outer filament whorl connate into a short tube, glabrous; ovaries pubescent, styles 3-cleft. Capsules pyriform, 6-8 cm long, 4.5-6 cm wide, 3-locular, 4-5 seeds per locule, valves woody, i-1. 5 cm thick. This species is close to C. semiserrata, only the capsules are pyriform, pericarp woody, seeds 4-5 per locule. Of the members of subsection Reticulata with pubescent ovaries, only this species and C. polyodonta are 5 seeded.

Flowers are light-red or red, usually 5.0-8.0 cm, up to 12.0 cm in diameter, borne singly at the tips of twigs. Perules 9-10, outside grey-pubescent. Petals 6-8,3.5-4.5 cm long, broadly obovate, tip rounded or slightly emarginate, slightly united at the base with the staminal column. Androecium glabrous, 1.0-1.4 cm long, outer layer of stamens fused from the base into a short tube. Gynoecium 1.5-2.0 cm long, 3 styles slightly divided at the tip, ovary tomentose. Blooming season: spring. Capsules subglobose, 4.5-6.0 cm in diameter, 3 locules, pericarp wall 10-15 mm in thickness. Seeds glabrous. Leaves elliptic to long-elliptic, tip acute, base broadly cuneate,9.0-13.0 cm long, 4.0-5.0 cm wide, margin sharply serrulate on upper part of blade, thickly coriaceous, upper surface with lateral veins visible, midrib slightly raised, lower surface with lateral veins and midrib slightly raised. Petiole 10-15 mm long. Shrub or small tree up to 4 m tall, young shoots glabrous, older branches smooth, gray-brown in color. Distribution: Chaling County, southeastern Hunan Province, where it is contiguous with Lianhua County and Jinggangshan City of Jiangxi Province; Elevation: 500-600 m; Specific locality: Quanshuijing, Gaoxing Village,Yantang Township, Chaling County, Hunan Province,China.

Sunyatsen)。【形态特征】小乔木，嫩枝无毛。叶革质，椭圆形，长9-12厘米，宽4-6厘米，先端急锐尖，基部阔楔形或略圆，侧脉6-7对，边缘上半部有锯齿，长柄1-1.5厘米。花淡红色，顶生，无柄，直径4-6厘米；苞及萼9-10片，阔倒卵形，革质，最长1.8厘米，被灰白色柔毛；花瓣6-8片，基部连生，长2-3厘米；雄蕊5-6列，外轮花丝下半部连生成短管，无毛；子房被毛，花柱3裂，蒴果梨形，长6-8厘米，宽4.5-6厘米，3室，每室有种子4-5个，果片木栓质，厚10-1.5厘米。这个种近似南山茶C.semisserata Chi，但蒴果梨形，果皮木栓质，每室有种子4-5个。在子房被毛的Reticulata 的亚组里，只有本种及多齿红山茶C. polyodonta How具有5个种子。

高继银、帕克斯、杜跃强，2005. 《山茶属植物主要原种彩色图集》浙江科学技术出版社，第62页。花淡红色或红色，通常花径5.0~8.0厘米，最大可达12.0厘米，单花顶生。鳞片9~10枚，外被灰色短柔毛。花瓣6~8枚，长3.5~4.5厘米，阔倒卵形，先端圆或略凹缺，基部与雄蕊柱略连生。雄蕊无毛，长1.0~1.4厘米，外 轮花丝基部连生形成短管。雌蕊长1.5~2.0厘米，花柱先端3浅裂，子房被绒毛。花期春季。蒴果近球形，直径4.5〜6.0厘米，3室，果皮厚10~15毫米。种子无毛。叶椭圆形至长椭圆形，先端急锐尖，基部阔楔形，长9.0~13.0厘米，宽4.0~5.0厘米，边缘上半部具尖锐叶齿，厚革质，叶面侧脉可见，主脉略凸起，叶背侧脉和主脉凸起。叶柄长10~15毫米。灌木或小乔木，高可达4米，嫩枝无毛，老枝光滑，灰褐色。分布：湖南省东南部的茶陵县与江西省莲花县、井冈山接壌的区域，海拔500-600米。可寻地点:湖南省茶陵县严塘镇高星村泉水井。
