Hongrong Gongzhu

Hongrong Gongzhu (C. japonica 'Tama Peacock' × C. azlea F1 new hybeid 'Hongwu Jixiang'). Liu Xinkai et al. 2023, Illustrations of the New Camellia Hybrids that Bloom Year-round, Zhejiang Science and Technology Publishing House, p.432. HAR-35-16., a cross seedling (YUJX-No.33) of C. japonica 'Tama Peacock' × C. azlea F1 new hybeid 'Hongwu Jixiang'. Flowers dark red with waxy luster, occasionally bordered with very narrow white edges, semi-double to peony form, small size, 6.0-7.5cm across and 4.3cm deep with 18-21 large petals arranged in 3-4 rows, petals broad obovate, wavy, apices emarginate, stamens always clustered into 5 clusters, filaments pale red, anthers golden yellow, bloom dense. Leaves dark green, leathery, elliptic, cuneate at the base, margins shallowly serrate. Plant upright and growth vigorous. Starts to bloom from autumn, fully blooms in winter and continuously in spring. The cultivar name means “Red Velvet Princess”.
