Description

» English Description

Anonymous,1834, Revue Horticole, pp.508, 509; Morren, 1834, L’Horticulteur Belge Journal, vol.2, p.93. Puddle & Hanger, 1960, RHS., The Rhododendron and Camellia Yearbook, No.14, p.154: Semi-double, with 11-13, broadly ovate, emarginate petals, colour Carmine 21/1, flower 8-10 cm across; stamens numerous, but merged in with centre petals. Leaves deep green, glossy, very broadly elliptic, apex short acuminate, margins widely serrate, 11.5 cm long x 7 cm wide. Plant habit, spreading and vigorous. In America Latifolia had been confused with Gloire de Nantes and Leeana Superba and the variegated form, with Fanny Bolis and Gloire de Nantes Variegated when these in fact, are all distinct cultivars. Nevertheless Buist, 1845, American Flower Garden Directory, p.222 describes the correct cultivar. Orthographic errors: ‘Latafolia’, ‘Lattrifolia’. Synonyms: ‘Latifolia Red’, ‘Latifolia Rosea’, ‘Latifolia Nannetensis’. Sport: Latifolia Variegated. See black and white photo, p.136, Hertrich, 1959, Camellias in the Huntington Gardens, vol.III. Note: Krussman, Gerd, 1976, Manual of Cultivated Broad-leaved Trees and Shrubs, p.268 states “Breeder Guichard Soeurs, Nantes: This is erroneous as Latifolia originated before 1834, prior to the existence of Guichard Soeurs. It is believed that Krussman was referring to Gloire de Nantes as the two names were confused in some areas of the USA.
