American Camellia Yearbook, 1975,No. 1380, p.238: A hybrid Granthamiana/Reticulata that first bloomed in 1966, ('Crimson Robe" x 'Granthamiana'); originated by Al Smith, Granada Hills, Ca. and propagated by Louis H. Shinault, Northridge Ca. Plant growth is spreading and medium in rate with dark green leaves; measuring 5½ inches in length and 2 inches in width. Flower: The semidouble type bloom is medium orchid pink shading lighter to center, 21 petals and 2 or more petaloids. Average size is 6-6¼ inches in diameter and 2¼-2½" inches in depth. Texture is silky with an iridescence, requires 3 to 4 days to attain full size, will hold 4 to 5 days in water, at room temperature, showable after 7 days under refrigeration, very long blooming period, irregular semi-double with ruilled edges on petals, twisted Iabbit eaTS and occasional petaloids. Blooms November through March.

This cultivar is a hybrid between C.reticulata ‘Crimson Robe’ (Dataohong) and C.granthamiana, made by Al Smith, Granada Hills, California, USA, that first bloomed 1966. The semi-double type bloom is medium, orchid pink, shading to lighter pink at the centre. The petals have a silky irridescence. Flowers early to mid-season. Orthographic error: ‘Louis Shinault’. Chinese synonym ‘Shinate’.
