Gao & Zhuang, 1989, The Camellia in China, p.51, No.321, colour photo No.186: Large size, 10-14 cm across, pink, open peony form with 3-4 rows of large outer petals and a centre of small, erect petals, petaloids and stamens. Blooms mid-season. Originated in China.
Nuchunhong. (Camellia japortica) Synonym: None Origin: Jinshajiang Grand Gorge Characteristics: Plant habit at average of vigor, crown open, with average growth in rate, large angle of branches. Leaves, medium dense, elliptical, apex apiculate, base broad obtuse, venation pronounced, green, measured 7 cm to 9 cm in length by3.5 cm to 4.5 cm wide. Sepals open. Petals large and flat, in 4-6 rows, imbricated loosely, about 40, apex notched. Stamens obviously in group, mixed with large petaloids of stamens, light pink, softer and thinner. Floral diameter 10 cm to 14 cm. Very rare and famous variety with large size flower in Sichuan camellias, large to very large dense, peony double form. Blooms January to April, with full blossom middle March. Key points of identification: Flower light pink, thinner texture and easy to wilt. Very typical color-mixed variety.
