American Camellia Yearbook, 1959, p.280, Reg. No.376: A 5 year old chance seedling, originated by Mrs Russell Cates, Albany, Georgia, USA which first bloomed 1957. Plant growth is upright and rapid with long, slender, dark green leaves. The rose-red, incom­plete double flowers, 11-12.5 cm across, have about 30 petals with a large number of petaloids. Early to mid-season flowering. Orthographic error: ‘Russell Gates’.
