Sichuan Dahongpao

SIchuan Dahongpao. (C. japonica). Zhou Li, 2011, Illustrated Handbook for Sichuan Camellias, p.44. Origin: Sichuan  Characteristics: Plant habit vigorous, with open canopy, medium branching, with acute branching angle, internodes medium. Leaves yellowish green, elliptic to ovate, with apex apiculate, base broad cuneate, measured 7.5 cm to 8.5 cm across by 4 cm to5 cm, margins slightly recurved, venation slightly notched. Undulated, serration shallow and sparse. Sepals open. Flower light red, diameter is 8 cm to 10 cm. Petals nearly rounded, with margins slightly reflexed and notched. Central petals not fully open as cordate shape. Formal double form, medium floral abundance. Blooming February to April, at fully blooming in March.  Key points of identification: Leaf venation depressed, leaves undulate, central petals not completely open as cordate shape
